First session in 1–2 weeks
We start the actual work. You'll have a clear treatment plan and know what to expect from the outset.
THE INITIAL ASSESSMENT
What your assessment involves
People often put off reaching out because they're not sure what they're walking into. The assessment is a structured conversation, not a test. Here's what we cover.
We set the agenda together
I'll run through everything we'll be covering, and you can flag anything specific you want to get out of the session.
A bit of background, then into the detail
I'll collect some brief background information, then we move into a proper in-depth conversation about what you've been going through. You don't need to arrive with a diagnosis or a neat way of describing it, working out what's happening is part of what I do.
We talk about your goals
We'll discuss what you're hoping to get from treatment. I'll give you a clear picture of what CBT can realistically achieve with the difficulties you're bringing.
We agree on a plan - or I point you somewhere better
If we're a good fit, I'll explain the CBT approach in full: how it works, what I'll expect from you, and what you can expect from me. We'll agree on practical things like session frequency and timing. If CBT isn't right for what you're dealing with, or if it sits outside my area of expertise, I'll say so clearly and suggest a more suitable route.
