CBT for health anxiety: getting out of the worry and checking loop
Health anxiety is exhausting. The googling, the reassurance-seeking, the doctor visits that don't help, it's a cycle that makes sense but keeps the anxiety going. CBT offers a way out of it.

UNDERSTANDING HEALTH ANXIETY
What health anxiety actually is
Health anxiety (sometimes called illness anxiety or hypochondria) is a pattern of persistent worry about having or developing a serious illness. It's not irrational, the worry feels completely logical when you're in it. But it's maintained by a set of behaviours that, despite offering short-term relief, keep the anxiety alive.
The pattern usually looks something like this: you notice a physical sensation, your mind jumps to a feared interpretation, you feel anxious, and you do something to reduce that anxiety, google the symptom, check the area, visit the GP, seek reassurance from someone you trust. The relief is real but temporary. Within hours or days, the doubt creeps back in.
The problem isn't information-gathering, it's that the cycle teaches your brain that checking and reassurance are necessary for safety. And so the threshold for anxiety gets lower over time.
Common signs of health anxiety
- Symptom checking: repeatedly checking your body for signs of illness
- Googling symptoms: getting stuck in medical websites for hours at a time
- Reassurance-seeking: asking family or friends for reassurance that doesn't hold
- Frequent GP visits: multiple appointments for the same concern, or for reassurance
- Avoidance: avoiding health information, shows, or conversations out of fear
- Hyper-vigilance: constantly monitoring your body for sensations or changes
Note: Health anxiety isn't "all in your head", the physical symptoms you notice are real. The problem is in how they're being interpreted and responded to, not whether they exist. CBT doesn't tell you your symptoms don't matter; it works on the response to them.
TREATMENT APPROACH
How CBT treats health anxiety
CBT for health anxiety targets the cycle directly. We work on two things simultaneously: the thoughts (the interpretations you're making about physical sensations) and the behaviours (the checking, googling, and reassurance-seeking that maintain the anxiety).
The behavioural component is often the most important. Reducing compulsive checking and reassurance-seeking, even when it feels counterintuitive, breaks the cycle that's keeping the problem going. This isn't about forcing yourself to ignore symptoms. It's about learning to respond differently to them.

Understanding your specific pattern
We map out your individual health anxiety cycle, what triggers it, what thoughts come up, what you do in response, and how the cycle maintains itself over time.

Working with anxious thoughts
We look at how your mind is interpreting physical sensations and what evidence actually supports those interpretations. This isn't about "positive thinking", it's about accuracy.

Reducing safety behaviours
Gradually reducing checking, googling, and reassurance-seeking. This is done in a structured way, not all at once, but systematically, with support throughout.

Tolerating uncertainty
Health anxiety is often about intolerance of uncertainty. We work on developing the ability to sit with "I don't know" without it becoming unbearable.
WHAT TO EXPECT
What working together looks like
Sessions are 60 minutes, online, usually weekly. For health anxiety, most people see noticeable change within 8–16 sessions, you're not committing to years of therapy.
There will be things to work on between sessions. The most important changes happen in your daily life, not just in the room. We will agree on specific tasks to work on between sessions.
One thing worth knowing: the early stages of CBT for health anxiety can feel uncomfortable. Reducing reassurance-seeking increases anxiety temporarily before it decreases. I'll prepare you for this and support you through it.
